How Relevant Is Ecommerce To Young Chinese People?

In the past few weeks at enoVate, we’ve looked into flourishing markets related to the Chinese youth such as running, travel and eco-friendly products. For this week, we’ve put on our consumerist hats and are taking a look into the franticly evolving world of online shopping.

A quick glance at Taobao (often referred to as the Chinese ebay) which now has over 145million register users, 39% between the ages of 16-25, shows the large presence of ecommerce in the lives of many young Chinese. Taobao’s market share has grown year upon year and with recent innovations such as a payment on delivery scheme, the Alibaba group’s domination in the world of ecommerce is set to improve. However, can we judge the growth of Chinese ecommerce in China’s youth market based solely upon taobao?

This week we’ll be focusing on:

  • what products are being bought online?
  • ecommerce and its connection to the flourishing DIY scene?
  • if young people favour selling online as much as they do buying?
  • what trends are we seeing amongst those who shop online.

Keep an eye on our blog for insights into the above mentioned topics as well as more expert interviews and first hand opinions from the Chinese youth.
